Best in Show

Today was a day of ups and downs. I got up this morning and went to class which was a bit of a waste. We spent the first 15 or so minutes talking about Captain America. His assassination is a little unsettling, but there is always hope that rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated. Then we spent the rest of class talking about a term paper, that perhaps 1% of us have started. We talked about a lot things involved in this paper: resources, obstacles, organization, APA format. We started talking about all the little rules in APA format. Mr. East said, "You know APA format states you are only suppose to put one space after the period. But I can't help it, I usually have to go back and fix that before I submit anything." Some kid in the back said, "Who would care how many spaces came after your period." Everyone laughed. I almost said I would. I wanted to speak up and give everyone a proper typographic history lesson, but I didn't want to come off as type freak. In retrospect I should've spoke up and told them (the class) that it isn't just APA that calls for that. You really shouldn't ever do two spaces after your period. And because I didn't give my little lecture in class. You are going to get it here. See back in the day of the typewriter the dyes that were the characters were all cut the same so you had to put two spaces in your type to differentiate sentences. But then the word processor was invented. See all font packages come with kerning tables. This means the period is "pre-adjusted" to make the adequate space. Now I know this because I am a designer and by extension typographer. These are the things I am suppose to know. But my thought is this, with everything a computer can do why in the world would you think that you have to hit the space bar twice at the end of a sentence. That is like a 10th of second you wont ever get back.

I also had to take a math test today, I think it was my best so far, but still i didn't do too well...85% raw. That doesn't do too much for my overall grade, but it makes me feel a little bit better about the class.

But now what I really want to talk about. There is an AIGA art show going on at school right now called Communicate. The poster that is pictured above was one of three pieces I entered. It also happens to be the piece that one Best of Show!!!! The piece is called IT is Power. I think this also solved my problem about the 100 Show. I just have to decide do I print it full size (20x30) or about half size (11x17). It is more impressive full size as compared to half size, but it is going to be harder to submit full size. I guess at least I have a week to think about it.

One more bonus. I bought an large format printer. It should be delivered tomorrow. I will be waiting all day for it!

Wow you do know way too much about typography. I always put 2 spaces after a period. I'm not sure I could ever change it to just one.

I hope you enjoy your new printer.
